We are pleased to announce our 8th International Ophthalmology Conference, where the most cutting-edge and revolutionary innovations in ophthalmology will take centre stage. The conference theme ‘A Year in Focus’ is a yearly review of the most prominent  events, learning, research and launches in Ophthalmology with an eye on the expected breakthroughs for the year ahead.

This year’s event will unite more than 60 renowned contributors to ophthalmic practice at the international, regional, and local levels, creating a platform for collaborative learning and dialogue across all ophthalmic subspecialties.

Dr. Ammar Safar

Dr. Ammar Safar is American Board Certified in Ophthalmology and is a highly experienced consultant in vitreoretinal diseases and surgery. Dr. Ammar is the Medical Director of Moorfields Eye Hospitals in the UAE. He is based in Moorfields Eye Hospital Dubai.

Dr. Ammar undertook his medical training in Syria before moving to the United States for post-graduate training. He specialised in Ophthalmology at Georgetown University in Washington, DC. He then acquired an additional 2-year fellowship training in Vitreoretinal Diseases & Surgery at the University of Texas, Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, USA. Dr. Ammar then went on to hold the position of Assistant and later Associate Professor and Director of Vitreoretinal Surgery at the Department of Ophthalmology, Jones Eye Institute, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, in the United States. In addition to his work in private practice, Dr. Ammar has undertaken research and clinical trials in areas such as diabetic retinopathy and age-related eye diseases, and published and presented extensively.

Aniruddha Agarwal is currently working as an Associate Staff Physician (Medical and Surgical Retina, and Uveitis) at the Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi. Previously, he was a faculty (Assistant Professor) at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, India. He has completed his Clinical Research Fellowship at the Stanley M. Truhlsen Eye Institute, Omaha, Nebraska, USA (2014-2016) and Surgical Vitreoretina Fellowship at PGIMER, India (2016-2019).

He has received the Kataria Memorial Gold Medal from Prime Minister of India in 2014. In 2024, he completed his Ph.D. from the Maastricht University, The Netherlands.

He has authored more than 275 publications and 40 book chapters. His areas of interest include ocular imaging, retinal diseases and uveitis.

Prof. Dr. Nezzar Hachemi, MD, PhD, FEBO is a renowned oculoplastic ophthalmic surgeon and strabismologist, currently serving as the Head of the Department at Dubai Hospital. Prof. Gemmy Cheung

Professor Gemmy Cheung is the Arthur Lim Professor in Ophthalmology at Duke-NUS Medical School, National University of Singapore (NUS). She leads the Medical Retina Department at Singapore National Eye Center and heads the Retina Research Group at the Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI). Her research focuses on Asian retinal diseases, including age-related macular degeneration (AMD), polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV), and myopic macular degeneration.

With over 300 peer-reviewed publications, Prof. Cheung is a prominent clinician-scientist known for her extensive research in AMD and PCV. She has led major clinical trials in anti-VEGF therapies and has been invited to deliver more than 130 lectures at international conferences. Her accolades include prestigious awards from the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Macula Society, and the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology. Prof. Cheung is also featured on the Ophthalmologist Power List for 2021 and 2022.

Dr. Ibraheem El-Gharably

Dr. El-Ghrably, MS, PhD, FRCOphth is a staff physician in the eye institute at Cleveland clinic Abu Dhabi. Prior to joining Cleveland clinic Abu Dhabi he was a consultant retina specialist at James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough, UK. Dr El-Ghrably was the Royal College tutor for the department of ophthalmology, at James Cook University Hospital, also he was the educational and clinical supervisor for specialty trainee doctors. He chaired the Research and Development (R&D) lead for the division of surgery in JCUH for a while and was the Ophthalmology representative for North East Local Eye Health Network (LEHN).

Also he was the Founder of Northern Regional Annual Audit meeting and a member of royal college, UK national committee for requirement of specialist trainees.

In April 2012 he received the NHS Clinical Excellence Award from JCUH as recognition for his excellent clinical service and his contribution in: teaching, training and research. And in January 2000 he had Nottingham University research prize for his PhD project.

Dr. El-Ghrably has a special interest in medical and surgical retinal disorders. He did large number of ocular surgeries including: 4000 phacoemulsification with intraocular lens and nearly 1000 of Vitreoretinal surgeries. He was actively involved in research and been awarded a PhD degree from Nottingham University, UK in 2000. He was the principle investigator for some clinical trials e.g MERLOT and Comrade clinical trials at JCUH. He has published widely and regularly invited as a speaker in many national and international conferences.

Prof. Konrad Schargel

Dr. Konrad Schargel MD, PHD, FEBO is a distinguished ophthalmologist with extensive training and experience in glaucoma, anterior segment, and retina. He completed his MD degree at Universidad de los Andes in Mérida, Venezuela, followed by an Ophthalmology degree and PhD at Universidad Central de Venezuela in Caracas. Dr. Schargel pursued multiple fellowships in anterior segment, retina, and glaucoma at Hospital Universitario San Juan de Alicante in Spain.

He has held several key roles, including Division Chairman of Glaucoma and Anterior Segment at the same Spanish hospital, and has worked in the Glaucoma and Ocular Trauma section at Hospital Universitario de Torrevieja in Spain. Dr. Schargel is also a professor at the School of Optics and Optometry, Universidad de Alicante, where he supervises master’s students in clinical optometry.

Internationally, Dr. Schargel serves as a Glaucoma Consultant at King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital in Saudi Arabia and is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the College of Medicine, AlFaisal University in Riyadh. He is also the Chairman of the Glaucoma Division at King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital.

Dr. Marie Aouad Maroun

Dr. Marie Aouad Maroun is a Professor of Clinical Anesthesiology and Chairperson of the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine at the American University of Beirut. She earned her MD from Saint Joseph University, Beirut, and completed her residency at Hôpital Hôtel Dieu in Lyon, France, and AUBMC. Dr. Aouad is certified in Anesthesiology and Critical Care by the Arab Board and holds a certification in Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography from the National Board of Echocardiography (USA).

Her clinical expertise includes pediatric and pediatric cardiac anesthesiology. She played a pivotal role in achieving ACGME-I accreditation for AUBMC’s Anesthesiology residency program and continues to lead in this area. Dr. Aouad is actively involved in various committees and is a member of the Arab Board of Medical Specialization in Anesthesiology.

With over 120 publications, Dr. Aouad is a noted author and serves as a reviewer and board member for several national and international journals. She has presented at numerous scientific meetings worldwide.

Dr. Matthew Wilson

Matthew W. Wilson, MD, FACS is the Professor and Chair of Ophthalmology at the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center in Memphis, TN, and Director of the Hamilton Eye Institute. He holds the Barrett G. Haik Endowed Chair and the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Endowed Chair in Pediatric Ophthalmology. A native of Atlanta, GA, Dr. Wilson earned his medical degree, residency, and ophthalmic pathology fellowship at Emory University. He furthered his training with fellowships in ocular oncology at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital and Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, and in ophthalmic plastics and reconstructive surgery at Casey Eye Institute/Oregon Health Sciences University.

Dr. Wilson is an active clinical and translational researcher with over 150 peer-reviewed publications. He directs the St. Jude Global Retinoblastoma Program and has established retinoblastoma centers of excellence in Central America, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. He has trained numerous fellows in ocular oncology and oculoplastics and serves on the Board of Trustees for both the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology and Furman University, his undergraduate alma mater

Prof. Sajjad Ahmad

Prof. Arshad Kanani

Arshad M. Khanani, MD, MA, FASRS is a Managing Partner, Director of Clinical Research, and Director of Fellowship at Sierra Eye Associates and Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine.

Dr. Khanani founded the clinical research department at Sierra Eye Associates, which is now one of the leading clinical research centers in the country. He has served as a principal investigator for over 100 clinical trials and has been a top enroller in the country for multiple Phase 1-3 trials. In addition, Dr Khanani has been the first one to perform surgical procedures in multiple surgical clinical trials dealing with sustained delivery and gene therapy. He has over 90 scientific publications.

Dr. Khanani also serves as a member of national and international clinical trial steering committees as well as scientific advisory boards with the goal of bringing new treatment options for patients with retinal diseases. Dr. Khanani is frequently invited as a guest speaker at national and international meetings.

Dr. Khanani is an elected member of the Macula Society, Retina Society and has received numerous awards of distinction. In 2019, he received the Nevada Business Magazine Healthcare Heroes Physician of the Year award for his continued dedication to the field of ophthalmology. He has received the Senior Honor Award from the American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS) and was also awarded the prestigious ASRS Presidents’ Young Investigator Award in 2021. In 2023, Dr. Khanani was invited to give the prestigious 2023 Ernst Bodenheimer Memorial Lecture at the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Dr. Avinash Gurbaxani

Dr Christiane Haddad directs the pediatric ophthalmology service in the department of ophthalmology at the American University of Beirut. She is also a visiting consultant at Moorfields Eye Hospital Dubai. In addition to seeing clinic patients (pediatric glaucoma, cataracts, strabismus, and congenital ocular diseases), she takes care of patients in the nursery and in the Children’s Cancer Center of Lebanon (CCCL) in collaboration with St Jude Cancer Center in Memphis, USA. Along with the oncology team, she helped establish a Retinoblastoma Program accepting retinoblastoma patients of all nationalities (now around twenty-two active patients) offering work-up, imaging, treatment (systemic and local), surveillance and genetic testing/ counseling. Dr Haddad oversees teaching residents clinical and surgical pediatric ophthalmology and in training the retina fellow in the areas of retinopathy of prematurity and retinoblastoma. She engages in research both nationally and internationally, with main interests in amblyopia, genetic eye diseases, strabismus, pediatric glaucoma, and retinoblastoma.

He is a graduate of P.J.Safarik University in Kosice, Slovak Republic and has completed both vitreoretinal and uveitis fellowships at the University of California, San Diego. He also holds a master’s degree in clinical research from UCSD. He is currently a consultant vitreoretinal surgeon, Retina Division Chief and a Director of Research at the Moorfields Eye Hospitals in the United Arab Emirates. His clinical interests include age-related macular degeneration, diabetic and hypertensive retinopathy, uveitis, and vitreoretinal surgery.
